F1 rejects canopy, ‘screen’ proposals for F1 cockpits

Proposals for kitting out Formula One cars with a canopy to enclose the cockpit have reportedly been dismissed by F1 team bosses.

The proposals first surfaced after Ferrari’s Felipe Massa had a horrific crash in Hungary two years ago after he was hit by a spring from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn car.

“You can have covers and you can have canopies, but you also have to be able to get at a driver to extract him. There are a lot of secondary considerations,” Ross Brawn is quoted as saying to GMM.

The FIA is reported to have been considering poly-carbonate screens however there were fears both for the safety of both drivers and spectators – it was feared that if the car overturned or caught fire, drivers could have difficulties escaping from the car, whilst some believe that debris ricocheting off the screens could fly into spectators.
