I like how James Hunt used to be biased towards Niki Lauda in his comeback days. :P

I like how I did not hear most of the commentary because I was focused on the racing  .

If there's any commentary team worth listening to it's Murray Walker and James Hunt :cloud9:

I liked that commentary team aswell but the point of this thread was to show what passing was all about and if followed, not even closely, one will recognize why such feats of passing were achieved in regards to some of the idea's that have been mentioned/implemented in regards to the current formula/rules.

I appreciate that the passing from that video was brilliant stuff and is one of the reasons why I like the Turbo era of F1, but I couldn't help but mention that I enjoyed Hunt's "GO ON NIKI!!!" moment.

That #27 car always brings a tear to the eye.
Alesi got his sole victory with that number. Alesi is also something missing from F1. Last of the late brakers.
Just look at those fat tires and small front wings, no appendages to be seen. They went sideways as a matter of course then, a real crowd pleaser. These days going sideways loses you a lot of time. I guess it's so mechanical, proffesorial, kinetically perfect, all the excitement has been metered and regulated out.

They could "steer with the rear", and that's the big difference. They got most of their traction from the behemoth Goodyears they rode on, not from Dr. Bernoulli. Between the current over-dependence on aerodynamic downforce and all those cookie-cutter Tilke tracks, the only real racing occurs in Q3.

^^ Great bit ^^

1) Its not just dependence... there will always be aerodynamic devices and engineers won't back track to when they knew less about air flow; the problem is over dependance. The current regs leave cars with close to nothing but aero, at the moment it is lost (trailing behind a car) the car is left with nothing to work with to challenge for the overtake.

2) Those sterile Tilke tracks. Sure, not all of them are bad and its not even bad to have some of them on the calendar... but they are so sterile; and focused on the current over-dependence on aero. There is nothing like real, ingenue... ocurring tracks.

considering all the innovations to driver, car and track safety like the hans device, energy dissipating crash structures on the cars, safer barriers, and run off areas big enough to land a 747, i think its about time to repeal some of the bad rules implemented as a knee jerk reaction to senna's death. we can give the ride height back to the teams, and give them a few inches of car width back as well.
