"Nikita Mazepin was over a second quicker than the Formula 1 field in his first test for Mercedes at the Circuit de Catalunya."

Pretty sad when a F2 driver is 1.3s faster than the rest of the F1 field just by jumping into a Mercedes for the first time. He proved that he (or probably any half way competent driver) could have easily won the Spanish GP.

Drivers are pretty meaningless right now as F1 is an engineer/car designer championship c/w excessive tire management and fuel saving to further dull down the racing.

Helo overboost. F1 is not easy to figure out like this especially if you are new to following F1. Don't look too much into times now testing. Also the tire compound here is C5 and the tire compound with Bottas pole was C3 and with the track getting use for days and getting as they say rubber in it makes cars times different. Also different weather and temperature. The C5 Pirelli tire is much faster than other compound. It goes C1 hard to C5 the softest and fastest. You cannot compare. Look Albon time in Red Bull Toro Rosso. Only a little bit faster than same Albon time in quali. And look at Ferrarin Antonio Fuoco faster than Leclerc who is very fast driver. Anyway 1sr post here, hopefully I explain things a little bit for you so you not so confused or upset.

"Marko: Second-class F2 driver showed just how good Mercedes is"

Hey Marko came up with the same observation that I did. I don't know if this is a good thing.

Anyway it shows that almost any driver coming in cold could win a gp in that car. Just set the thing to auto-pilot I say and we can avoid all the team order bs and driver quarrels and pictures of their (tax owing) private jet.

I've been watching F2 on the F1TV streaming service, and it's amazing, lots of wheel to wheel action, changes of position throughout the field. I think that F1 would do well to emulate the lower formula. F1 may be the pinnacle of motorsport technology, but it is not the pinnacle of motor racing, by a long way.

Considering how they got here, is it any wonder?
What other team (I'd say in F1 history) wrote the rules/regulations about car development, whilst simultaneously building their engine and then suggests a freeze on development for other teams?
